September things

September started off so well, despite continued above-average temperatures and THEN OMG THERE’S SOMETHING WRONG WITH MY FOOT AGAIN.

And, yup, that about sums it up.

My right foot, which was injured two years ago and then had something weird, briefly, wrong with it last year, bothered me again this month.

And, just like those two previous times, the pain didn’t come while on a run. This time, it kind of started when I was walking down some steps.

So I pretty much shut things down the second half of the month. I did get back on the bike a few times and reminded myself how important those “other things” are, but I’m not happy about this at all.

Keeping the bigger picture in mind, I’m not going to force myself back to things too quickly and not try to rush the Richmond Marathon or even the half. At this point, I will probably drop down to the 8k for that weekend.

Things are feeling fine with my foot now, although there’s some occasional discomfort from time to time. I feel good enough though to start from scratch in October and let my body dictate what I do.

My main goal right now is to get to November and the end of the year not having any issues and revamp things - mentally and physically - for Blue Ridge Marathon training this winter.

And that’s all I have for now …

The thing with my right foot is ...

A little more than a year ago, the process of starting over with running was underway. I was freshly out of a walking boot and making really small improvements every day.

I finally ran again on Dec. 1 after nearly two months off, increasing my distance just a tiny bit for every run and every week. The past year has certainly had its ups and downs — I’ve gotten really motivated at times, but it seems like at every moment that I’m ready for something new or bigger, my mind or body just isn’t ready.

In the past month, though, it’s all seemed to come together nicely. Overall my runs were feeling a lot better and mentally I got past thinking every day about the boot and that pain I felt last year.

Until last Saturday morning.

That same pain in my right foot came back. I couldn’t get out of bed to help one of my sons with something. I could barely walk to my car just to get myself to the doctor, again.

With the pain I was feeling, I really didn’t want to give things another 24-48 hours. Not with it being the same pain as a year ago that left me with so many questions about what I had done to myself.

But after about an hour with the doctor, negative x-rays and some weird bending of the foot to rule out ligament damage, I pretty much did nothing on Sunday but Google what could be wrong with my foot.

Well, several hours later, along with doing some things the doctor recommended, my pain mostly subsided. By Wednesday morning, it was 99% gone.

Without going into great detail, the doctor did a great job explaining to me what was probably happening, and why I had pain return to this same part of my foot. “Old injuries” have added up over time, leaving my foot prone to scars that will just flare up time to time.

So what did I do to make this happen? Well … that’s a good question, because I can’t pinpoint a specific moment that might have caused it.

However, I do know that in the past couple of weeks, I’ve been on a treadmill a couple of times. And I’ve slacked off with cross training with weights in my lower body. And I wore some older shoes this week to work that were a little too old.

Did one of those cause my foot to act up? Or maybe a combination of those things?

Maybe. Maybe not. I’ll never know.

But I do know, I’m done with the treadmill. This week I will return to doing leg work in the gym at least once a week. And those old shoes will be tossed into a donate pile.

And if that pain comes back soon?

I may actually just completely quit with running again for a while.
